Agricultural Engineer Mustafa Sayan, who stated that they brought 3 awards to Kahramanmaraş from two different International Olive Oil Quality Competitions, said that they were happy for the award they brought to the city from the Anatolian IOOC International Olive Oil Competition, where 254 competitors from 13 different countries participated, and the Olive Istanbul IOOC International Olive Oil Competition, where 222 competitors from 15 different countries participated.
Mustafa Sayan, in his interview, said, “This year, we received three separate awards from two different international olive oil quality competitions in Kahramanmaraş province. First, we brought the Silver category award to our city as a result of the evaluation of 16 foreign and 6 Turkish juries from 13 different countries, where 254 companies participated in the Anatolia IOOC international olive oil quality competition, which we attended the award ceremony in Ayvalık Gömeç.
Subsequently, we won the gold medal award from the Olive İstanbul IOOC international olive oil quality competition, which was held in İstanbul for Kahramanmaraş, both for the Maraş oil variety and for the oils of different varieties of olive trees such as Ayvalık, Gemlik, Arbequina, which were planted in our province after the 2000s. Again, there was a competition where 222 participants from 15 different countries participated and 18 olive oil tasting experts from 12 different countries made evaluations.
We proved our success by winning two gold medals there. We manage to produce high quality olive oil from the olive trees grown in our province. We produce, package and sell very high quality olive oil with high polyphenol, oleuropein and oleocanthal phenolic component ratios above European standards.”
Professional Olive Groves are Being Established
If we evaluate the olive situation in our Kahramanmaraş province, in fact, the number of people was few in the past. The existing groves seemed to be many, but the number of people has increased now, in fact, more groves are being established now. Enclosed olive groves have begun to be established in our city. Especially after 2008, an olive basin was declared in the Sır Dam basin of our province. It is a project carried out by the Governor at that time. The number of olive groves in our province increases every passing year and, moreover, very beautiful professional olive groves are being established in large areas in the form of enclosed olive groves. We believe that this will bring olive cultivation to the place it deserves in our province in the coming days, that such a market will be formed here and that it will produce value-added products and create a new source of income for our province.

Our citizens can understand real olive oil with their taste; But I am involved in the olive oil business, I worked as an olive oil expert for a national company for 10 years. Let alone quality olive oil, it is very difficult to understand whether olive oil is real olive oil or not. It definitely needs to go to a laboratory. It is really very difficult and challenging for citizens and individual household consumers to understand real olive oil. The color of olive oil is not a criterion because the colors of the oils change according to the harvest period. You cannot understand whether the olive oil is frozen or not. Our citizens can obtain olive oil by purchasing branded products from markets. They should prefer packages with a brand, business address, contact number, production permit, and barcode. They should definitely not go for yellow tin packages with no markings on them.
We Set Out with the First Name of Kahramanmaraş in History
Our brand name, Maraj, is the first name that Kahramanmaraş province has taken in history. Maraj, a successful Hittite commander, was assigned to establish a new city during his lifetime and came to this geography. He liked this geography and told the Hittite ruler of the period that he wanted to establish a city here. A city was established here. With the approval of the Hittite ruler, the city was given the name Maraj for the first time in history. Our city, which later took the names Markasi and Germanicia, was adopted by the Proto-Turks due to the difficulty of pronouncing other names. Over time, we changed the letter J to Ş because we had difficulty pronouncing it, and it became Maraş. We took this name as our brand. We set out on this path in this way.”
